Rhizome short, subloosely tufted. Culms erect, 25-60 cm tall, trigonous.
Leaves slightly shorter than culm; blades 3-5 mm wide; basal sheaths reddish or brownish purple, slightly shiny.
Spikes 3 to 6, close together and subfastigiate except lowest; terminal spike gynaecandrous with a short staminate part at base; lateral spikes pistillate, oblong to elliptic or oblong, terete, 1-3 cm long, 5-6 mm wide, densely many-flowered, subsessile to peduncle. lowest bract leafy, slightly overtopping inflorescence, all not sheathing.
Pistillate glumes elongated elliptic, 3.2-3.8 mm long acute at apex, dark purple-brown to purplish black, keel yellowish. Utricles suberect, obovate or elliptic, 3-3.5 (-3.8) mm long, broader than, surpassed by glume, plano-convexed, yellowish green, 7- to 9-veined on abaxial side; beak short, purplish, subtruncate at orifice. Achenes loosely contained, obovate, triquetrous; stigmas 3.
Probably a synonym of <i>C. atrata</i>, more studies are necessary.
